Things People Try and Sell But No-one Buys

Video Tapes (VHS)

Of all the car boot undesirables, these are probably the most common. Big, bulky and grossly inferior to their successor, the Digital Versatile Disc (DVD), is there any point taking these to Car Boot Sales? In most cases, no, the majority of VHS’s will not sell and will only serve to take up vital ‘real estate’ space on your pasting table.

There are, however, some exceptions. This surprised me as much as it might you, but some video tapes are worth good money. I actually bought a video tape containing a famous doctor a couple of weekends ago, mistaking it for a DVD Box set in my haste. To my surprise this video was actually worth a considerable amount of money and I sold it earlier this week for a big profit.

It just goes to show that there is money in every possible niche you can think of – you’ve just got to know what to look for, or get lucky!

Books

This one is a little misleading. Books are a fairly sought after, and in some cases, very collectable item. So why have I included them in this list? Because I have seen seller after seller turn up with nothing but boxes and boxes of books. And while some people may buy them, lots of 20p and 50p’s aren’t going to make much on top of your pitch fee.

Sports Games

Every sports fan wants to have the latest version of their favourite sports game on their Playstation, Xbox or Nintendo Wii, be it Fifa, Pro Evo or NHL. The games developers are more than happy to oblige and they duly release a new sports game every year to tie in with the new seasons starting.

The fact that these new versions offer very little compared with the previous one doesn’t seem to make much difference. Users quickly trade in the previous seasons games in for the upgraded version and prices come tumbling down. With the recent release of Fifa 10 for example, Fifa 2009 can be had for less than £1 on Amazon Marketplace for the Xbox 360!

It can be really difficult to shift these games at car boot sales, though you can usually get rid if you are prepared to let them go really cheaply – you would be lucky to get than £1 for the above game!

Pop CD’s

You probably know which ones I mean but here are a few examples anyway;

Step One – Steps – 1p on Amazon!
Spice Girls – Spice – 1p on Amazon!
All Rise – Blue – 1p on Amazon!

Very few, if any, people want to buy CD’s like these anymore, despite them selling in incredibly high numbers originally.

Cassette Tapes

This is a similar example to video tapes, but in audio, rather than video format. Cassette tapes were made largely redundant with the advent of the compact disc which bettered them in almost every way. There are very few collectable audio tapes that are worth buying for resale, and as a seller I wouldn’t even bother taking them with you to a car boot sale.

They are the only examples I can think of off the top of my head – What can you guys come up with?

Spot on Steve. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that as they are probably THE most common car boot sale item!

Most of the ones I see don’t even have any leads with them, which makes them even less sellable.

I would say old original Sony Playstation 1’s. I see loads of these and nobody wants them due to Playstation 2 playing the games and some Playstation 3’s playing them as well!
